Fear of Change Prevents Growth: Lessons From My Masters Degree (2).

#TalkingThursday – If you don’t talk about Jesus who will?

Hello and welcome! This is the second post from the LFMMD series. You can read the first post for a general introduction to the series: “When God has moved on but you haven’t”.

Now, let’s jump in!

When I moved from Liverpool to London for my Master’s degree, it was a whole new world. A very fast-paced and expensive world. I had only just gotten the hang of Liverpool and gotten my own group of sisters in my church, now I’d moved to London to do it all over again, and I only had one year. I figured I just couldn’t, so I didn’t bother trying. That was my first mistake. I hated the uncertainty of change, so I chose to do it alone. What if I faced rejection?, what if I never fit in? As a Christian, I shouldn’t be worrying about these things, yet somehow they crept up on me.

I didn’t want to find a new church. I kept live streaming the services from my church in Liverpool and convincing myself that it was enough. The first and only time I mustered the courage to go to a new church in London, all I did was compare it to the one in Liverpool instead of finding positives and trying my best to adapt to the new atmosphere. It’s no surprise that like the rich young ruler, I never went back.

“Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” At this, the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

Like the rich young ruler in Mark 10:17-31, who was scared of a life without possessions, I too didn’t want to give up my comfort. It’s not that I didn’t want to grow, its that the risk was too much for me. As a result, my spiritual gifts were laid waste and locked away for an entire year, all because of my fear!

Flowers would never bloom if you told them about bees

I was like a flower afraid to open up because I was scared that insects would destroy everything. Just like the Israelites in the wilderness, I didn’t have the courage to step out because all I kept thinking about were the negatives.

Don’t walk my footsteps, don’t let the uncertainty of change and fear of taking risks hinder your growth in Christ. You don’t want to look back on your youth thinking “what if I had done this or that?”. Don’t be afraid to give up things for the sake of the kingdom. Don’t be afraid of change. Step out as God leads you and trust that He’ll be there to see you through until the end.

Join me next Thursday for the continuation of these lessons, I’ll be discussing: An Isolated Christian Is A Dangerous Loose Cannon!

Grace & Peace.
