#MeditationMonday – Out of the abundance of a man’s heart, his mouth speaks.
The secret of the LORD is for those who fear Him,
And He will make them know His covenant.
—Psalm 25:14 (NASB)
Hello dear reader, hope this post meets you well. Sometime ago I did a post called, The mercy of God is with who? which actually inspired today’s post. We’ll be meditating on psalm 25:14 which says that God’s secrets are with those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant (NKJV).
It’s like a relationship. When someone sees that you care about them and the things that concern them they will be more comfortable to open up to you. When God sees that you love him and respect Him enough to take His desires and laws seriously He will trust you with His secrets and tell you His plans.
I’ll illustrate further with a passage from Daniel 5:1-31 (selected verses)
In the same hour the fingers of a man’s hand appeared and wrote opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace; and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. Now all the king’s wise men came, but they could not read the writing, or make known to the king its interpretation. Then King Belshazzar was greatly troubled, his countenance was changed, and his lords were astonished.
The queen, because of the words of the king and his lords, came to the banquet hall. The queen spoke, saying, “O king, live forever! Do not let your thoughts trouble you, nor let your countenance change.
“There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the Spirit of the Holy God. And in the days of your father, light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him; and King Nebuchadnezzar your father—your father the king—made him chief of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers. “Inasmuch as an excellent spirit, knowledge, understanding, interpreting dreams, solving riddles, and explaining enigmas were found in this Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar, now let Daniel be called, and he will give the interpretation.
Then Daniel was brought in before the king. The king spoke, and said to Daniel…
“I have heard of you, that the Spirit of God is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you … that you can give interpretations and explain enigmas. Now if you can read the writing and make known to me its interpretation, you shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around your neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.”
Then Daniel answered, and said before the king, “Let your gifts be for yourself, and give your rewards to another; yet I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation.
Then the fingers of the hand were sent from Him, and this writing was written.
“And this is the inscription that was written:
MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.
“This is the interpretation of each word.
MENE: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it;
“TEKEL: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting;
“PERES: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.”
Then Belshazzar gave the command, and they clothed Daniel with purple and put a chain of gold around his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom.
It is astonishing that nowhere else in scripture was something so marvellous ever done again. The interpretation of dreams was also something Daniel was great at, as well as Joseph and although what happened in this passage can be said to be similar to interpreting dreams, this was clearly something different. This was a secret of the Lord, and He showed it unto Daniel. Why Daniel? Because the Spirit of God was with Him!
Just in case you missed it, here’s what the king said had to say about Daniel:
“I have heard of you, that the Spirit of God is in you, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom are found in you. And I have heard of you, that you can give interpretations and explain enigmas.
Daniel was known for explaining enigmas! And that is exactly what the handwriting on the wall was, an enigma! yet Daniel without any stress, was able to reveal and explain it. He was able to do this because God trusted him with the secret of that enigma! Daniel did all things with the fear of the Lord in his heart, which is why God was able to trust him with the meaning of that secret. The Spirit of God made Daniel excellent in wisdom and understanding.
If we want access to the secret things of God, we must strive to be like Daniel, we must walk with God and fear Him in all that we do. As we do this, God will trust us enough to show us His covenant. Read more about how to fear the Lord.
Access to the secret things of God brings many benefits, just as we see that Daniel was exalted and made the third ruler in the nation. If you read on to chapter 6 you’ll see that he also gained favor with the next king (King Darius) after King Belshazzar was slain according to what Daniel had said while interpreting the writing on the wall.
The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
— Deuteronomy 29:29 (NKJV)
From the verse above, another usefulness of God telling us secret things is that it can be a guide for generations to come. That is truly God showing you His covenant like He did with Father Abraham. God asked him to count the stars, for that would be how numerous his generation would be and then God asked Abraham to circumcise everyone in his household as a symbol of preparation for that covenant and this symbolic act was carried on for generations to come!
God can reveal what He is about to do in our families in future years and generations to come and this will enable us to prepare for it now.
When we begin to operate in the fear of God and He shows us His secret things, we must be careful never to break God’s trust. We should remain humble and carefully obey whatever it is God shows us, never disregard whatever God reveals to you, be it an instruction or a warning.
Prayer: Father, I thank you for you’re a wondrous God. All knowledge and wisdom is yours, please help me to fear you and walk in your ways so that you may reveal your secret things to me as you did with Daniel. Lord, you give grace to the humble, I have humbled myself before you; please give me grace to fear you, so that you may show me your covenant and help me to carefully obey all that you instruct me to do, in Jesus name. (Amen)
Grace & Peace!
