What is the point of prayer?

Prayer is important but do we really know why? Why is it that we are encouraged to pray all through scripture, 1.Thessalonians 5:17 says to pray without ceasing.

Why are we encouraged to pray?

Jared Brock in his article the real point of prayer writes:

If you spend time with God in prayer, you’re going to become more like Jesus. As we spend time with God in prayer for others, we’re compelled to do something on their behalf. Sometimes we become the answer to our own prayers, and sometimes we are the answer to the prayers of others. Prayer is a relationship! It is the way to cultivate our relationship with God. The Bible says to pray at all times with all kinds of prayers, but a lot of people think that prayer is just one thing. That’s like going to a buffet and only ever-eating one item. You get tired and bored, if you do that. You need a huge variety in order to stay active and healthy. Prayer is a menu with many things, not a ready made dish.
